The IG-541 (also known as Inergen) fire suppression system is an inert gas fire suppression system widely used to protect areas sensitive to water or containing valuable equipment, such as data centers, communication rooms, archives, museums, etc. It consists of three naturally occurring inert gases found in the atmosphere: nitrogen (N₂), argon (Ar), and carbon dioxide (CO₂). Specifically, its composition is typically 52% nitrogen, 40% argon, and 8% carbon dioxide.
Key Features of IG-541
Safe for Humans: At designed concentrations, IG-541 is safe for humans because it does not significantly reduce oxygen levels to a hazardous degree. The presence of carbon dioxide helps compensate for increased respiratory rate, allowing people to breathe normally during brief exposure.
Environmentally Friendly: As a mixture of naturally occurring gases, IG-541 contains no ozone-depleting substances and does not contribute to the greenhouse effect, making it harmless to the environment.

Working Principle
When a fire is detected, detectors installed in the protected area trigger an alarm and, after a delay period (typically 30 to 60 seconds) to allow for personnel evacuation, the high-pressure IG-541 gas stored in cylinders is released. The gas rapidly fills the entire protected area through pipes and nozzles. Since IG-541 is slightly heavier than air, it can effectively envelop the fire source, dilute oxygen, and prevent flame propagation until the fire is completely extinguished.
